Collection Instructions

Submit 2 specimen types: CSF and Blood

 

Specimen Collection: Spinal Fluid (CSF)

Container(s): Sterile transport tube

Preferred Volume to Collect:

Minimum Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL

Collection Instructions: Label tube as spinal fluid (along with 2 patient identifiers)

 

Specimen Collection: Blood

Container(s): Gold Top (Serum Separator-SST Gel)

Preferred Volume to Collect: 5.0 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Collection Instructions:

  • Gently invert gold tube(s) 5 times to mix clot activator with blood.
  • Blood may be collected within 72 of CSF collection.
  • Blood should be processed within 2 hours – See Processing Instructions.

Serum not collected within 72 hours of CSF collection.
