Epic Code LAB1230390 Immature Platelet Fraction (Reflex Only) (Lab Staff Order)
Test Name Alias
Reticulated platelets | immature platelets | young platelets | IPF
Interface Order Alias
1230390
Clinical Information
The immature platelet fraction (IPF) measures the reticulated platelets (platelets containing mRNA) in peripheral blood. IPF reflects the bone marrow thrombopoietic activity, increasing when platelet production rises and decreasing when production falls. Thus, IPF is useful in determining whether the thrombocytopenia is secondary to decreased production (aplastic causes) or peripheral platelet destruction (such as ITP or TTP). IPF is a good predictor of platelet recovery and can be used to monitor the patients rebounding from hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) transplantation or chemotherapy.
