Clinical Information
The amino-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen (P1NP) is probably the most specific and sensitive marker for monitoring the efficacy of osteoporosis therapy with anabolic agents, but it is also one of the best bone turnover markers for monitoring the efficacy of antiresorptive therapy.
Ordering Instructions
Procollagen 1 intact N-terminal (P1NP) values should not be used as a screening test for osteoporosis in the general population.
Collection Instructions
Specimen Recommendations
- There is diurnal variation of P1NP levels, with the values being higher at night.
- When serial measurements of P1NP are performed, specimens should be collected at the same time of the day.
- Fasting versus fed state may also cause variation in results. Therefore fasting sample is recommended.
- P1NP is metabolized in the liver. In individuals with severe liver disease, clearance from the circulation might be affected resulting in elevated P1NP levels.
