Epic Code LAB1231046 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex PCR, Sputum

Important Note

This PCR test is used as an adjunct to AFB Culture (LAB8770). Because culture is more sensitive than PCR and isolates are needed for susceptibility testing, AFB culture must be ordered on any specimens submitted for PCR.

Test Name Alias

MTB, tuberculosis, rifampin | | 1230102678

Interface Order Alias

1231046

Clinical Information

PCR for M. tuberculosis may be considered alongside AFB culture. The high negative predictive value of PCR testing is primarily used for inpatients to more quickly discontinue airborne precautions. This PCR test does not detect nontuberculous mycobacterial species (NTM).

Ordering Instructions

It is recommended that no more than two PCR tests be ordered within a 30 day period. If additional tests are desired, please contact the Microbiology Laboratory.
