Ordering Instructions
PCR testing is preferred for diagnosis of acute infection. Detect neutralizing antibodies to echovirus types 6, 7, 9, 11, and 30.
Collection Instructions
Specimen Collection: Blood
Container(s): Gold Top Serum Separator Tube (SST) or Plain Red Top
Preferred Volume to Collect: Full tube
Minimum Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL
Collection Instructions:
- Gold/Serum: Allow blood to clot for 30 minutes in a vertical position and centrifuge within 2 hours.
- Mark samples plainly as "acute" or "convalescent."
PROCESSING INSTRUCTIONS
Separate from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.
Transfer 1 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.3 mL)

- CSF or plasma.
- Contaminated
- Hemolyzed
- Severely lipemic
Specimen Stability
After separation from cells
Ambient: 48 hours
Refrigerated: 2 weeks

Reference Range
Echovirus 6: Less than 1:10
Echovirus 7: Less than 1:10
Echovirus 9: Less than 1:10
Echovirus 11: Less than 1:10
Echovirus 30: Less than 1:10
Interpretive Data
Single positive antibody titers of greater than or equal to 1:80 may indicate past or current infection. Seroconversion or an increase in titers between acute and convalescent sera of at least fourfold is considered strong evidence of current or recent infection.
