Collection Instructions

Container:

  • Preferred: BacT/Alert FA Plus (aerobic green top) and BacT/Alert FN Plus (anaerobic orange top) blood culture bottles.
  • Volume:
    • Maximum 10 mL per bottle.
    • Minimum: 0.5 mL per bottle.

NOTE: More volume leads to better sensitivity in recovering organisms present within a specimen.

  • Alternate: sodium/lithium heparin tube

 

 

Specimen Stability

Ambient: Send to laboratory as soon as possible (≤24 hours)

Test Frequency

Available daily, preliminary report available within 24 hours.

Cultures are incubated and finalized at 5 days.
