Clinical Information
Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that inhibits factor Xa. The test is performed on plasma from patients undergoing anticoagulant therapy with apixaban in situations where quantification of apixaban levels may be indicated: Patients with bleeding or risk for bleeding, patients with conditions known to affect pharmacokinetics (e.g. deteriorating renal function, extremes of body weight, treatment with other drugs known to affect pharmacokinetics of apixaban).
Ordering Instructions
Specimen should be collected 3 to 4 hours (peak) after dose or just prior (trough) to the next dose for apixaban concentrations.

- Processed Specimen: Double Spun Platelet Poor Plasma with a platelet count <10 X 109/L

Processing Instructions:

- Separate plasma into 2 - 3 aliquots, minimum of 0.5 mL each.
- Freeze aliquots in plastic transport tubes immediately.
