Clinical Information

JC Polyoma Virus DNA, Quantitative, Real-Time PCR, CSF - JC Polyoma Virus is the cause of Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a severe demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. PML is a particular concern for individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Quantification of JC virus DNA is based upon the real-time PCR amplification and detection of JCV genomic DNA. Reportable range is 50 to 50,000,000 IU/mL (1.70 to 7.70 Log IU/mL).

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: 0.7 mL Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), in a sterile collection container. (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Transfer CSF to a plastic transport tube. Maintain specimen frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below) prior to transport.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Transport: 0.7 mL CSF, Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): (Minimum: 0.3 mL)

Rejection Criteria

Specimens not collected or processed as indicated.
