LDH Pleural Fluid: Pleural fluid LD/serum LD ratio of greater than 0.60 or pleural fluid LD greater than 2/3rds the upper limit of normal serum LD is consistent with exudate. Pleural fluid LD/serum LD ratio of less than or equal to 0.60 or pleural fluid LD less than or equal to 2/3rds the upper limit of normal serum LD is consistent with transudate.

LDH Pericardial Fluid: Biochemical analysis of pericardial fluid (pH, total protein, glucose, LD) is of limited clinical value in most cases.  Light's criteria, originally established for pleural effusions, have been shown to classify nearly all pericardial fluids as exudates regardless of etiology.
