Collection Instructions

Specimen Collection: Body Fluid


Container(s): Lavender EDTA tube (ideal) or non-heparinized sterile container

Preferred Volume to Collect: 3.0 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL


Collection Instructions:

  • Label container with patient information, specimen source, and date of collection.
    • Body fluid source required to perform test.
  • •All fluids need to be received in lab as soon as possible, ideally aliquoted in a Lavender EDTA, immediately after collection to preserve cell integrity.
  • For EDTA, gently invert tube 8 - 10 times
  • Transport Temperature (Inpatient/ED): Room Temperature

  • Transport Temperature (Outpatient/Off-site): Refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

  • If entire specimen is clotted (with exception of synovial fluids)
  • Specimens which are not from a sterile body cavity (e.g. wound drainage, abscess, pus, cyst, etc.)
  • Frozen

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 4 hours

Refrigerate: 24 hours

Laboratory Retention: 7 days (14 days United Lab)

Test Frequency

Available daily, usual TAT 1 day.

Synovial fluid

Total nucleated cells (TNC) = 0-150/uL


Serous fluids (pleural, peritoneal, pericardial):

Total nucleated cells (TNC) = 0-500/uL


Other Body Fluids:

The reference range and other method performance specifications have not been established for other body fluids that are not readily obtainable in healthy individuals. The test result must be integrated into the clinical context for interpretation.
