Collection Instructions

Specimen Collection: Body Fluid

 

Container(s): Lavender EDTA (ideal) or non-heparinized container

Preferred Volume to Collect: 3.0 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL

 

Collection Instructions:

  • Label container with patient information, specimen source, and date of collection.
    • Body fluid source required to perform test.
  • All fluids need to be received in lab as soon as possible, ideally aliquoted in a Lavender EDTA, immediately after collection to preserve cell integrity.
  • For EDTA, gently invert tube 8-10 times
  • Transport Temperature (Inpatient/ED): Room Temperature

 

Processing Instructions (Laboratory, Outpatient or Off-site collection)

  • Transport Temperature (Outpatient/Off Site): Refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens which are not from a sterile body cavity (e.g. wound drainage, abscess, pus, cyst, etc.)
  • Frozen specimens
  • Specimens that are entirely clotted (with the exception of synovial fluid)

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 4 hours

Refrigerate: (Preferred) 24 hours

Laboratory Retention: 7 days

Other Body Fluids:

The reference range and other method performance specifications have not been established for other body fluids that are not readily obtainable in healthy individuals. The test result must be integrated into the clinical context for interpretation.
