Clinical Information
Fetal Cells by Flow Cytometry is an assay used to quantitate fetal erythrocytes in a mother’s peripheral blood sample by staining the red blood cells in the sample with monoclonal antibody specific for Hemoglobin F. The extent of fetal maternal hemorrhage (FMH) can be determined and the results are used to calculate the dosage of Rhogam to give RhD- mothers carrying an RhD+ fetus. FMH testing is also used in evaluating fetal/maternal placental trauma.
