Clinical Information

Factor XII is a component in the contact activation system.  Factor XII deficiency is not generally associated with a bleeding risk.  Useful for the investigation of a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time.  Also used for the diagnosis of Factor XII deficiency. An association between severe Factor XII deficiency and thrombosis risk has been suggested, but it has not been proven.

Specimen Collection: Blood

Preferred Volume to Collect: 2.7 mL (full tube)

Minimum Volume to Collect: 1.8 mL (full tube)

Processed Specimen: Platelet Poor Plasma with a platelet count <10 X 109/L

 

Centrifuge/Spin: Yes

Processing Instructions:

  • Detailed instructions (link): Preparing Platelet Poor Plasma
  • Separate plasma into 2 - 3 aliquots, minimum of 0.5 mL each.
  • Freeze aliquots in plastic transport tubes immediately.

  • Ambient (up to 1 hour)
  • Frozen (plasma only >1 hour)
