Important Note

SUSPECTED PSEUDO HYPERKALEMIA LABORATORY EVALUATION

  • Potassium, Whole Blood  (WBK) testing is recommended when  PSEUDO HYPERKALEMIA is suspected.
  • WBK analysis is performed on an unspun anticoagulated (Whole Blood) VENOUS specimen. Arterial specimen NOT required.
  • WBK does NOT require respiratory therapy to collect an arterial specimen, or to be involved.

 

Phlebotomy: Hand Deliver to Corewell Health Reference Lab (35 Michigan, Grand Rapids) or Blodgett Respiratory Department.

Collection Instructions

Specimen Collection: Whole Blood

 

Container(s):  Capped heparinized syringe (Capped heparinized syringe must be used due to pseudo-Hyperkalemia being suspected.)

Minimum Volume to Collect: 0.5 mL in a 1 mL syringe, 0.8 mL in a 3 mL syringe

Capillary collect ok? N

Microtainer acceptable: N

 

Collection Instructions:

  • After collection gently mix syringe by rolling and inversion
  • Must be analyzed within 30 minutes - HAND DELIVER to laboratory or respiratory immediately.

Rejection Criteria

Reject due to

  • Syringe still has needle. Remove needle and cap off syringe before bringing to the Lab or Respiratory Department

Reference Range

0 up to 3 days: 4.0 - 6.5 mmol/L

3 days up to 3 months: 3.8 - 5.5 mmol/L

3 months and up: 3.4 - 5.0 mmol/L
