Specimen Collection: Blood
Container(s): Heparinized blood gas syringe (capped) or Green top (Lithium Heparin) non-gel
Preferred Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL
Minimum Volume to Collect: 0.5 mL
Collection Instructions:
- Collect at hospital sites only
- Capped heparinized blood gas syringe is preferred specimen
- Deliver to laboratory immediately (must be analyzed within 30 minutes)
- Do not expose to air
- Do not store on ice

Lab Staff Instructions
Lab Central:
If a cord gas is uncapped during transportation in the tube system, bring specimen to Trouble Shooters for ERS. If one is uncapped and the other is not, remove the one that can be analyzed, wipe the tube down carefully and place in a clean bag for department technologist. Place the uncapped tube in the white basket in the trouble shooter's fridge.
